THE SCOPE BEHIND THE PRICE

How to Read a Freight Quote

Understand each quote item and clarify its coverage with the right questions.

This is an educational example with no amounts or real shipment details. Confirm coverage, charges and terms from the actual quote and its provider.

Included

The covered service, quantity and limits should be explicit. Check the breakdown before adding an included item again.

Excluded

Ask which item will be priced separately and who pays it. Excluded does not mean that the cost cannot arise.

Not specified

Do not treat a blank or unexplained item as zero. Clarify the coverage and pricing basis in writing.

ILLUSTRATIVE QUOTE · NO AMOUNTS

Read a quote line by line.

The rows below are not a price list. Open each item to explore its possible scope and the questions to ask the provider.

Route and delivery points
Origin, destination and service start/end points should be explicit.
Equipment and quantity
Container type, quantity and cargo characteristics should match the quote.

Ocean freight

Check the start and end points covered by this transport item. Read the port/door coverage together with the service bundle described in the quote.

A question to ask the provider

From which point to which point does this freight item apply, and which services are included in it?

Terminal handling · THC

Origin and destination terminal services may appear as separate items or within a bundle. Ask which end is covered and whether the same cost appears elsewhere.

A question to ask the provider

Which origin and destination terminal items are included, and what is their charging unit?

Documentation

Documentation labels vary by provider. Ask for the scope of standard documents, additional requests and amendments rather than assuming that one item covers them all.

A question to ask the provider

Which documents and processes does this cover, and is it charged per document, set or shipment?

Origin and destination inland transport

If inland transport is included, read its start/end locations and service limits. Ask separately about loading, unloading, waiting and empty-container movement coverage.

A question to ask the provider

Between which points does inland transport apply, which operations are covered, and is anything priced separately?

Surcharges and bundled coverage

The surcharge name, trigger and inclusion in the bundle should be explicit. Read inclusions and exclusions even for an “all-in” quote; product-specific bundles do not define every offer.

A question to ask the provider

Which surcharges are included or excluded, and which conditions may trigger later charges?

Compare the service scope

Free time and delay conditions

Ask which charge, event and day-counting rule the free time covers. Check separate or combined demurrage/detention and terminal storage against the quote and applicable tariff together.

A question to ask the provider

Which item has free time, from which event does it start, and are calendar or working days counted?

Review waiting charges

When comparing two quotes

Match the service points first

One quote may be port-to-port and another may extend to a delivery address. First align the service points and inclusions.

Then match units and quantities

A per-container item differs from a per-shipment item. Both quantities, currencies and charging bases should be explicit.

Keep unknowns visible

Do not treat an unspecified period or charge as free. State the comparison’s limits until missing coverage is confirmed.
